MONROE, CT — A shoplifter reportedly said, “you can’t touch me,” to a Stop & Shop manager who grabbed the cart full of items he was wheeling out of the store on Monroe Turnpike Tuesday morning.
Police said a male wearing a black jacket and gray sweatpants rolled past the self-checkout with a cart of Huggies baby wipes, Pampers diapers, Similac baby food and an 18-pack of Corona beer for a total of close to $156.
The store manager told police the shoplifter rolled the cart into the Chase Bank parking lot at 456 Monroe Turnpike, where a a red Honda Civic arrived and picked him up. The car drove on Elm Street, toward Shelton.
The store manager did not get a good look at the driver and could only describe the shoplifter by his clothing, police said. The incident occurred around 11 a.m.
Honda crashes into pole, goes down embankment
A 34-year-old Mansfield Center man escaped serious injury after crashing his 2011 Honda Civic into a utility pole on Hattertown Road and going down an embankment in the area of Guinea Road Tuesday afternoon.
Police said he told officers he was not injured and had small scrapes on his right arm. He was evaluated at the scene by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel. Town firefighters also responded to the crash, reported around 2:35 p.m.
The driver told police he drove his Honda Civic east on Hattertown Road and a deer ran across the road as he negotiated a curve to his left.
He reportedly swerved to his right and struck a utility pole, cracking it, before his car came to rest down an embankment. The damaged vehicle was towed.
Vandalism
On Wednesday a 21-year-old Castlewood Drive woman told officers someone vandalized her 2018 BMW X1 sometime overnight.
She left her locked vehicle in her driveway at 9 p.m. Tuesday and noticed the damage at 7 a.m. Wednesday. Police said a fresh scratch left a white mark from the right rear door to the right front door to the right front quarter panel.
The victim told police she does not know who could be responsible for the damage, adding she did not see or hear anything suspicious overnight. Nothing was recorded on a Ring camera and no similar occurrences were reported by neighbors, police said.
Police said there was no estimate on the cost of the damage.
