U-Haul hits McDonald’s drive-thru overhang

A man driving a U-Haul at the McDonald’s drive-thru on Monroe Turnpike Saturday morning struck the overhang by one of the windows around 10:50 a.m.

Police said the manager told the driver to pull into a parking space, but he drove off instead, evading the scene of the accident.

Officers were dispatched to the restaurant at 11:12 a.m.

The manager described the driver as a black man wearing a white shirt. She also had the license plate number of the truck, but police could not find a match. Police said U-Haul’s can have out-of-state plates, making it more difficult to track.

The damage to the overhang was minor, according to the report.

DUI on Longview

A Longview Road resident reported a suspicious vehicle parked on the street Saturday night, leading to a DUI arrest.

Officers responding to the call at around 8:17 p.m. found a gray Hyundai Elantra parked on the side of the road and as they approached the vehicle, the driver started the engine, according to the report.

The officers observed several bottles of medication and two bottles of rum in plain sight, police said, adding the driver, a 64-year-old homeless man, had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, had bloodshot, glassy eyes and his speech was slurred.

The man’s performance on field sobriety tests determined he was under the influence, leading to his arrest, police said.

He was charged with operating under the influence and released on $500 bond for a Sept. 16 court date.
