Two Planks’ show promises to be a g-r-e-a-t time

Actors in Two Planks Theater Company’s summer workshop will star in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” with shows at Jockey Hollow Middle School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The musical is about eight awkward adolescents competing in a spelling bee, each having spent hours and hours preparing for the numerous levels of competition before coming together at the county spelling bee.

“Throughout the evening, we find out who they are as they begin to learn about themselves and start to realize they can be more vulnerable, that winning isn’t everything and they concentrate more on the relationships with the other participants rather than the competition,” said Susan Halliwell, the creative director.

Two Planks’ production of “Spelling Bee” is directed by David Halliwell, who is Susan’s husband, and Judy Abbatiello is the choreographer.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday cost $25 each and can be bought at the door or online

The actors ages range from 13 to 21.

“This group has more advanced students and they’re taking on a challenging musical,” Susan said. “This show won numerous Tony Awards in 2005.”

She said “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” will have audience participation, allowing people to sign up to be guest spellers and join in the fun.
