MONROE, Conn. — A steady line moved at the ballot box for Monroe’s town budget referendum, while more voters filled in ballots at tables inside the Monroe Community Center gym Tuesday morning. Checkers also busily greeted voters who stood in lines by street address. Mary Zenobia, an election volunteer, directed the flow of people coming through the door.
“It seems like it’s been very steady and people are very interested,” said Linda Schulman, the moderator at the polls.
The numbers bear that out. As of 1 p.m., 1,057 people voted compared to 753 at the same time in 2025, according to the Registrars of Voters Office.
The polls at the Monroe Community Center, 709 Monroe Turnpike, will be open until 8 p.m.
The $113.6 million town budget proposal for fiscal year 2026-27 carries a 4.2 percent tax increase. The spending plan includes $35,943,054 for municipal services and contingency funding and $77,700,763 for education.
If it is approved, the mill rate would increase from 28.67 to 29.879 mills. Individual tax bills can be calculated by multiplying one’s assessed property value by 29.879 — the rate the Board of Finance is expected to set if the budget is approved at referendum — then dividing by 1,000.
