MONROE, Conn. — Stepney School proudly hosted its annual Veterans Day assembly Tuesday to honor and thank the men and women who have served in the United States military. The morning began with a warm welcome for 17 veterans, who gathered for coffee and conversation in the teacher’s lounge before joining students and staff for the ceremony.

As students entered the cafeteria, they viewed a video tribute highlighting moments from past Veterans Day celebrations. The program began with the Girl Scouts introducing the Boy Scouts, who carried in the American flag for the presentation of colors.
Together, the school community joined in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moving performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by the fourth-grade class.
Principal Ashley Furnari welcomed the audience and spoke of the importance of honoring those who have served, reminding students of the many ways they can express gratitude to veterans in their lives. Fourth grade students shared information about the meaning of Veterans Day before recognizing each visiting veteran by branch of service.
Fourth graders performed several patriotic songs led by Stepney music teacher Keri Salustri, and fifth graders presented a community service project, Operation ELF: Supporting Families of Deployed Soldiers, dedicated to supporting military families.
The assembly concluded with Furnari thanking her staff, students and guests for their efforts in creating such a meaningful event. The entire Stepney community then joined together in singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” a wonderful finale celebrating the courage and sacrifice of all who have served our country.
