Saunders, Masuk softball shuts out Southington as Ely and Lieto homer

Mary Saunders dominated a potent Southington offense with a three-hit shutout.

MONROE, Conn. — A tough Southington softball team that had put up 45 runs over its first three games was held completely in check by Masuk pitcher Mary Saunders in an 8-0 home win Friday afternoon. Masuk improved to 6-0.

Saunders allowed just three hits and fanned nine batters. Third baseman Julianna Falcone made some great plays to help her pitcher.

The Panthers got all the offense they would need on a first-inning solo home run by Grace Ely, but tacked on more runs in the middle innings and pulled away late.

Masuk put up two more runs in the third and busted the game wide open in the sixth.

Ely doubled, collected three hits and drove in three. Josie Lieto had two hits and a pair of runs driven in. Ava Parente and Peyton Webb both doubled.

In the third Lieto walked, Ciena Perpetuo singled and both runners stole bases to set up a Saunders sacrifice fly. Masuk added another run in the frame.

In the eighth, Falcone singled and scored on a Parente double; Ely doubled home another run; and Lieto crushed a two-run home run.
