MONROE, Conn. — Already a very special event with performances by the Harmony on the Sound chorus and Masuk High’s band and choir, the Monroe Women’s Club’s annual tree lighting on the Monroe Town Green became even more special with arrival of our friends from the North Pole on Saturday night.
Santa and Mrs. Claus came via a Monroe Fire Department truck and passed out candy canes before taking time to meet with every child among the hundreds in attendance. First Selectman Terry Rooney addressed the crowd and parents and grandparents recorded the Masuk musicians on their phones.
Monroe Social donated and served hot cocoa and hot cider, Marcello’s Eatery donated cookies and Dunkin Donuts provided coffee and doughnuts. Jone’s Family Farms donated the tree and a large contingent of young attendees helped count down the lighting.

“It is very nice. This is what a small town is all about,” Women’s Club volunteer Lisa Mayer said.
“It really means a lot for the town. It kicks off the holiday season for a lot of people,” said Veronica Condon, one of the Women’s Club’s co-presidents.
The tree lighting tradition started 25 years ago with 10 people standing around a tree, emcee John Buck said. Throughout the years the event has become so popular hundreds come out to the green to celebrate the occasion.
“It keeps growing and growing,” Buck said.
