Police: Thief flees after Monroe resident steps outside

by Bill Bittar
February 16, 2024

MONROE, CT — A Karen Drive resident saw someone checking vehicle doors in his driveway around 1:10 a.m. Tuesday. When he stepped outside of his house, he told police the suspect ran and got into a vehicle that drove off.

The resident did not get a description of the thief nor the fleeing vehicle.

Lt. Michael Sweeney said the incident occurred right before the snowstorm.

He reminds people to lock their vehicle doors and not to leave valuables or key fobs inside.

Fraudulent charges on HSA card

A 37-year-old Monroe woman reportedly learned about 14 fraudulent Amazon charges on her health savings account totaling $1,581 after her HSA card was declined when she tried to make a payment for a medical procedure, according to a police complaint made Monday.

Police said the charges were made from January to the beginning of February.

The victim opened a fraud report through the benefits office and needed a police report to document the incident for their investigation.

The woman’s accounts were frozen and police said she was going to notify her banks of the incident.

Warrant arrest

A 22-year-old Oxford man turned himself in on a warrant Thursday for charges stemming from a theft in Wallingford. Police said he allegedly pawned the stolen item at a Monroe broker.

He was charged with fourth-degree larceny and released about posting seven percent of his $10,000 court set bond. He has a Feb. 23 court date.

Vandalism at St. John’s Cemetery

The groundskeeper for St. John’s Cemetery, 500 Moose Hill Road, reported approximately 5,000 feet of lawn damage Monday.

Police said the damage was caused by tire marks consistent with an ATV. The tracks were made in a circular pattern.

The groundskeeper believes the incident occurred between 6 p.m. on Sunday and 7 a.m. on Monday.

I didn’t know that Monroe had a pawn broker.

I didn’t get much detail for that report. I wonder if it wasn’t sold at a traditional pawn shop.
