Police: Salesman’s aggressive pitch leads to arrest

Police arrested an Atlanta man following a complaint of overly aggressive door-to-door salesmen selling cleaning products on Lazy Brook Road Tuesday evening.

While checking the area for the salesmen, officers responding to the 5:25 p.m. call were stopped by a second resident, who complained of a salesman causing a disturbance.

The officers found Jamarcus Styles, 22, of Atlanta, on Spinning Wheel Road and tried to speak to him, but Styles refused to follow directions and began to scream profanities in front of several citizens in the area, police said.

Police learned Styles did not have a peddlers license from the town, which is required by ordinance, and that he was wanted on two non-extraditable warrants from Minnesota and New Mexico for similar charges.

Styles was charged with second-degree breach of peace and peddling without a license and held on $500 bond. He was taken to Bridgeport Superior Court for arraignment on Wednesday.

The Monroe Police Department reminds residents that police issue town of Monroe photo identifications for all approved solicitors. These identifications should be on the solicitors at all times when working in the town.

If solicitors do not have the proper issued identification, call the police department’s routine call line at 203-261-3622.
