Police identify Monroe man as the victim of a fatal crash on Route 111

Police identified the victim of the fatal crash on Monroe Turnpike Wednesday morning as Kenneth Tobin, 53, of 85 Lazy Brook Road in Monroe.

Tobin was driving his Chevy Suburban north on Route 111 around 11 a.m., when for an unknown reason he crossed the center line and struck an abutment on the Housatonic Railroad bridge near Route 34, then the vehicle rolled over, ending up on its roof in the north shoulder of the road, according to police.

Tobin was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Firefighters blocked off the road as officers investigated the scene of the accident and Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service volunteers also responded to the emergency call.

Monroe Turnpike was closed from Old Zoar Road to Route 34 as the Monroe Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team worked the scene with assistance from Fairfield police officers. The road was reopened to traffic around 4:20 p.m.
