Panthers dethroned by Hawks

Julia Bacoulis delivers during the SWC championship game.

STRATFORD, CT — After sitting atop the South-West Conference for six years, the Masuk High softball team has finally been dethroned.

Top seed Newtown blanked the No. 2 Panthers 8-0 in the title game, at DeLuca Field, on May 25. Masuk had won the last five championships with one spring erased by COVID.

Newtown pitcher Sydney Adolfson earned MVP honors; she held Masuk to three hits, struck out 12, and delivered at the plate with six runs batted in, three on a long home run.

Adolfson and Masuk’s Julia Bacoulis were both solid for the first four-plus innings. A two-out single by Adolfson plated a pair of runs in the opening inning and Bacoulis held Newtown at 2-0 for the next three frames, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the second inning.

Masuk’s Ella Bunovsky singled to right in the fourth and had a single in the sixth. Grace Ely singled in the fifth.

The Panthers will look to rebound in the state tournament.
