Panther swimmers and divers have record-setting efforts in SWC championships

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s boys swimming and diving team had a first-place finish and record-setting results in the South-West Conference Championships. The diving competition was held Wednesday at Pomperaug in Southbury and the Panthers hosted the swim events the next night.

In diving, Jake Ryan placed third overall out of the 10 divers in the SWC who competed with a finals score of 339.00, breaking the 11 dive record set by Kenny Pancoast (335.65) in 2009. Jude Mathien placed 10th with a score of 181.15. Both were personal best scores.

Mason Eannotti, pictured practicing this winter, went on to capture the SWC title in the backstroke race, breaking his school record in the process.

Mason Eannotti won the 100 yard backstroke race in a time of 54.55 and teammate Will Hardy was a very close second in the event in 54.61. Both competitors had times better than the school record time held by Eannotti heading into the meet.

Also in the backstroke race, Jack McHugh got his best time this season so far with a 56:43.

Masuk had several other strong finishes with competitors winning their heats and many finishing near or in the top 10 overall.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Akkie Yerragudi took first place in his heat with a time of 1:59:06.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Thomas Rodriguez, William Rodriguez, Aidan Cammarano and Akkie Yerragudi won their heat in 1:44:13.

Later in the same event a different Masuk relay team beat its best time. Eannotti, Matthew Buzinaro, McHugh and Hardy had a time of 1:33:28.

Will Hardy, in action during a meet this season, took second in the SWC backstroke championships.

Buzinaro placed second in his heat of the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:14:35. In this same event, Cammarano won his heat with his best time of 1:08:10, dropping about three seconds.

Hardy was the ninth overall highest point earner out of the approximately 130 swimmers across the nine teams that had competitors.

Masuk finished sixth as a team with 250 points. Pomperaug was first with 547.

Next up is State Trials at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford on Saturday, March 7.
