MONROE, Conn. — Voters will have the final say on a joint open space purchase of Benedict’s Farm by the town of Monroe and Aspetuck Land Trust, as well as on bonding for road maintenance and a culvert replacement on Todd Drive, the replacement of a garage door at Stevenson Volunteer Fire Department’s Station No. 2 and a vehicle replacement for the Stepney Volunteer Fire Co. A Town Meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of Monroe Town Hall this Monday at 6 p.m.
The Town Council set the meeting date and the Board of Finance recommended the bonding at its meeting Thursday night.
Town officials and Aspectuck Land Trust Inc. negotiated the $2,740,000 purchase of 65 acres of farmland from the Benedict family, which is aided by a $1.8 million Open Space Watershed Land Acquisition (OSWA) grant from the state of Connecticut.
On Monday, voters will be asked to authorize the bonding of an amount not to exceed $850,000 for the town’s share of the purchase.
The tract of farmland, which includes portions of 30 Old Newtown and 460 Purdy Hill roads, would be used for open space preservation, conservation and passive recreation.
Another resolution at Monday’s Town Meeting is to vote on bonding $2,030,000 for fiscal year 2026 for road construction/reconstruction and the Todd Drive culvert replacement.
Residents will also vote on a resolution to bond for $165,000 for fiscal year 2026’s Fire Department Improvements and Vehicle Purchase Project. The costs are for a garage door replacement at Stevenson Volunteer Fire Co. Station No. 2, and a vehicle replacement for Stepney Volunteer Fire Department and all associated costs.
