NEWTOWN — Monroe’s U12 softball team is competing in the SWCAA Tournament and putting its skills on display at Liberty Fields this weekend.
Monroe, after losing its first game 13-5 to the host Hawks, defeated the Wilton Warriors 9-8 in action on Saturday. With the win, Monroe is in the hunt for the championship as the tourney continues on Sunday.
Against the Hawks, Frankie Hollister was in the circle and pitched well, allowing only one earned run and striking out three in three innings.
Paige Embry stepped in and pitched two solid innings, striking out six and allowing only two earned runs. Hadley Davis, Abby Spalding, and Kashvi Kalaria had hits and Kalaria and Spalding drove in runs.
In the second game of the day, Zoey Pizzo Hartmann pitched six innings, striking out five and giving up only two earned runs.
Kalaria, Spalding and Devyn Passabet each had singles, and Emily Karas hit a double. On defense, Embry had four key putouts from third base near the end of the game to help seal the win. Karas and Spalding each had two RBI.
