The Monroe Red Storm, a seventh grade boys Travel Basketball team, won the Milford Knights Basketball League Championship, defeating Naugatuck 46-41 — and Monroe’s sixth grade team came in second.
It was an intense, hard fought game, that went back and forth throughout with neither team able to pull away. When Naugatuck managed to build a nine-point lead with about 11 minutes left, Monroe stayed tough, rallied and pulled ahead 41-38 with 2:20 to go.
The Red Storm’s players made clutch shots, including three pointers and a free throw down the stretch, while playing gritty defense for the win.

Several players were out with the flu, other illnesses and a broken foot, but those who were able to play stepped up.
Head Coach Bob Josephson led the Red Storm with assistant coaches Dan Sullivan and Mike Gorman.
The team includes Joey Sullivan, Jack Langenus, Jackson Mok, Keegan Garrity, James Domack, Brady Josephson, Michael Gorman, Caden Kozera, Nick Garofalo and James Ely. Among the teammates who were key contributors during the season, but were out sick last weekend, were Jeffrey Vargovchik and Lincoln Dewey.
Sixth grade team
Monroe Red Storm fans told The Sun their boys sixth grade team fought their way to the championship game at the Barclay’s Center, and though they came up short, it was an experience of a lifetime.
The sixth grade Red Storm team, which finished second were led by Head Coach Troy Owens.
Players included Colin Gorman, Michael Bittman, Peyton Marra, Kobe Orlando, Julian Bahamon, Ben Dalton, Logan Jonason, AJ Sheahan, Miles Lewis, Brady Egan and Colton Garvey.
