Monroe public schools releases 2024 kindergarten registration information

MONROE, CT —- Beginning July 1, 2024, a new Connecticut General Statute requires that children need to turn five-years-old on or before Sept. 1 to be automatically eligible for kindergarten. This is a change from the current kindergarten cutoff date of Jan. 1.

The statute also includes that a child who is not five-years-old on or before Sept. 1, but turns five before Jan. 1, may be admitted to kindergarten based on a school readiness assessment developed by the school district.

Monroe parents/guardians of children who fall in this birthday range of Sept. 2 through Dec. 31, and wish to have their child considered for kindergarten entry in 2024, must make a written request to Terri Balas ([email protected]), administrative assistant to Superintendent Joseph Kobza, and the child will be scheduled for an in-person assessment in March of 2024.

Monroe will be opening 2024 Kindergarten Registration for all students on the school district’s website on January 8, 2024. This registration will be for both those students who are automatically eligible and those who will be assessed in March.

Registration will also be open for all grade levels on that date.

For information regarding registration or early kindergarten entrance, visit the district’s website, www.monroeps.org, and click on the “Registration” circle icon on the front page. A letter for early entrance is embedded in the “Eligibility to Attend” section.
