Monroe Little Leaguers celebrate the end of a successful spring season

MONROE, CT — Monroe Little League celebrated “closing day”, the unofficial end to its season, at Wolfe Park last weekend. DJ Stillo (Joel Castillo)  announced all of the teams, who performed celebrations on the field, and older players handed out trophies to the younger teams.

Creative Music Center’s softball team won the award for best celebration. It was also a day of ceremonial first pitches.

“It was a great day for our league,” said MLL President Ryan Driscoll. “It’s wonderful to get all the kids and families together to celebrate another successful season and to recognize the volunteers, coaches and parents who make the season happen.”

First Selectman Terry Rooney threw a ceremonial first pitch to 12u all star Jeffrey Vargovchik.

“We appreciate the first selectman for coming out and supporting our kids and look forward to working with him and Parks and Recreation Director Missy Orosz, while continuing to offer opportunities for our kids,” Driscoll said.

Kaitlyn Biggs of Yale New Haven Health, which made a generous donation to Monroe Little League this season, also threw out a ceremonial first pitch. Colin Driscoll, a 10u all star, played catcher behind home plate.

Biggs gave out awards to Nicole Kahn, MLL treasurer, and Rick Quiricone, MLL softball and baseball coach, who were recognized as the Yale New Haven Health volunteers of the year.

Rooney shared how his experiences playing Little League, while growing up in Bridgeport created lasting memories and had a positive impact on his life.

“I believe it’s also important to recognize Monroe Little League is not only about baseball, it’s about community, friendships and social life lessons that will contribute to making our Monroe youth great individuals,” he said.
