Monroe Highway Department repairs portions of walkway to Masuk’s Benedict Field

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High School’s commencement ceremony will be held next month and Superintendent Joseph Kobza wanted to make sure repairs were made along the walkway leading down to Benedict Field in time for the big event.

“There were trip hazards,” he said. “That was the big thing, having it ready for graduation.”

Sections of the asphalt path near the top and about three quarters of the way down the hill leading to the field were in significant disrepair, according to Kobza, who said there were cracks and potholes in the middle with edges falling in.

On May 12, Monroe’s highway department, under the leadership of Public Works Deputy Director Bill Phillips and general foreman, Shane Everetts, milled and paved areas with the most significant damage in a job that took one day to complete.

“This is just an example of the benefit of having an in-town paving program,” First Selectman Terry Rooney said. “Even small projects like this can get very costly when hiring an outside contractor and scheduling work. This is important for public safety, timeliness and saving taxpayer money.”

Kobza said the project is an example of collaboration between the town and the school district.
