Monroe Elementary’s 90th birthday is a year long bash

MONROE, CT — The Monroe Elementary School community has been celebrating their school’s 90th anniversary since October with the PTO’ Fall Fun Run, and the festivities never stopped.

Students and staff received a special cup during the holidays in December, the bi-annual Gala (Parents Night Out) featured a 90’s theme last March, and the landmark anniversary was the theme of the school’s Memorial Day Parade float.

On Wednesday, June 4, Field Day T-shirts highlighting Monroe Elementary’s 90 years and the school’s colors of red, black and white will be featured at this year’s Spring Carnival — traditionally the last fundraiser of the year. The after-school event is a fun day for students, families and staff.

The PTO is also sponsoring a combination of the Spring Carnival and Students Appreciation Day, making it a big celebration for students and staff during the school day, right after lunch.

The Spring Carnival and Student Appreciation Day committees planned a daytime celebration, so all students can join in the festivities. Students will enjoy a bounce house obstacle course, carnival games, tattoos, arts and crafts, popsicles and popcorn.

“We truly appreciate all the volunteers and the families who have been supporting our fundraisers throughout the year, so we are able to host this day for our school community,” the PTO wrote in a press release.

Live, interactive entertainment will be provided by Liz McNicholl and John Hurley, who have been part of Student Appreciation Day for a few years.

The day will end with a whole-school concert with the band to sing Happy Birthday to the school, as well as to Principal Kelly Svendsen, who shares her birthday with the school.

Parents were invited to participate either going with the classes to the different stations or running the stations.
