Masuk’s baseball team battles SWC foes

MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s baseball team won two of three contests with South-West Conference opponents this past week, one with an impressive offensive outburst and the other with patience at the plate — without the benefit of a hit at that.

The Panthers went on the road and defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield 9-2 on Monday, April 22. Quinn McGuire pitched 6.2 innings and struck out nine for the win.

McGuire also added an RBI double. Jackson Zylick was 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Justin Feinstein was 2-for-2 with 3 walks and had three RBI. Steve Curtin added an RBI double.

Masuk hosted New Milford the next day and prevailed 2-1 despite not recording a base hit.

Justin Fanning pitched 6 innings allowing only one run and striking out five for his first career win. Feinstein came in to close out the game in the seventh inning striking out two batters to earn the save.

Catcher Chris Welch and the Panthers defeated Notre Dame and New Milford this past week.

Masuk may have been held hitless in the game, but five consecutive walks to McGuire (who scored), Chris Welch (scored the second run), Evan Alderman, Chris Cascella (RBI) and Colin Hope (RBI) in the second inning was all the offense the Panthers needed to win the game.

Masuk went to Bethel and fell 11-1 to the Wildcats on Thursday. Jacob Mondo pitched 3 innings in relief and Dan Curtin pitched an inning in relief. Feinstein had an RBI single. Zylick had two singles, a stolen base and scored a run. Hope also singled.

Masuk stands at 5-7 (3-3 in the SWC). The Panthers are in second place in the SWC Colonial Division, two games behind 5-1 Bethel.

Coming up this week Masuk plays at Joel Barlow Monday at 4:15 p.m., home versus Pomperaug at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday and at Newtown 6:30 p.m. Friday (at Fairfield Hills).
