Masuk swimmers competitive in home meet

Jack McHugh gave Masuk a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke event in the Feb. 7 meet.

MONROE, CT — A handful of first place finishes kept things close, before the Masuk High boys swim team came up just a bit short in a 90-80 setback to visiting Newtown on Feb. 7.

Brendan Kirberger won the 200 yard freestyle event in 1:51.41, narrowly beating Newtown’s fastest event finisher who came in at 1:52.00. Kirberger also took first in the 500 free, making his final touch in 5:08.22.

Carter Adragna was first in the 100 yard breaststroke event in the home meet on Feb. 7.

Sam McHugh won the 100 butterfly event in 57.60. Carter Adragna won the 100 free in 51.56, along with the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.67.

Masuk’s 200 yard medley relay of Jack McHugh, Adragna, Sam McHugh and Riley Sheppard was second in 1:47.59.

Adragna was runner-up in the 200 individual medley race in 2:14.95. Sheppard placed second in the 50 free in 24.43. Keller Hall was second in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 59.12.

The 200 free relay comprising of Kyle Zarkar, Sam McHugh, Enzo Maia and Sheppard came in second in 1:41.73, less than a second behind Newtown’s relay. Jack McHugh placed second in the 100 backstroke event in 1:00.25.

Masuk will visit Brookfield on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 5:15 p.m. and host New Fairfield Feb. 21 at 6. Masuk High will host the South-West Conference championships, set for Friday, March 3 at 5 p.m.
