MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s girls swim team had three meets the week of Sept. 29 and two more the week of Oct. 6 and had some standout performances in the pool against competition within as well as outside the South-West Conference.

On Sept. 30 the Panthers lost to Weston 97-83, but took first in the medley relay (Lena Savkovic, Laney Stillway, Izzy Murzinska, Skye Eannotti), 200 individual medley (Lena Savkovic), 500 free (Lena Savkovic), and 100 backstroke (Izzy Murzinska).

The Panthers had a fun and very close meet with Barlow-Bethel-Immaculate, falling 90-86 on Oct. 3. The team’s Think Pink Palooza fundraiser for breast cancer meet came down to the last relay.

Masuk swim team members Skye Eannotti, Meagan McCaffrey, Anastazja Malecka, Ishani Tyagi, Betty Glus, and Gabby Fonte participated in the Chasing Ciara’s Light 5K on Oct. 4.

The Panthers capped off the week with a 99-71 victory over Shelton in a makeup meet on Oct. 4. The Panthers swept in the 100 breast, going one-two-three as Julia Iannotta, and Ishani Tyagi took second and third in the event.

It was quite a Saturday, Oct. 4, for the Panthers. Some of the girls participated in the Chasing Ciara’s Light 5K on Oct. 4: Skye Eannotti, Meagan McCaffrey, Anastazja Malecka, Ishani Tyagi, Betty Glus, and Gabby Fonte. The Panthers also has a couple team members taking the SATs and many team members were preparing for the Homecoming dance that night.

“It was a very long, and exhausting week, but ended on a high note. We’re proud of the work they put in that week and the results that came from it,” Coach Emily DeMace said.

Masuk and Stratford tied 85-85 on Oct. 7. Masuk placed first and second in the 50 free (Lena Savkovic and Skye Eannotti) and first in the 400 free relay (Skye Eannotti, Lena Savkovic, Laney Stillway, Izzy Murzinska).

The Panthers recorded several top-five finishes, which proved to be important in a meet in which every point counted. In the 500 free, Siobhan Smith outswam and out-touched two swimmers from Stratford in order to get fourth place.

Pomperaug defeated Masuk 94.5-80.5 on Oct. 10.

“Pomperaug is always a hard meet, because they have the numbers and talent — it’s no secret. But Masuk did not give up or in. They fought hard,” DeMace said.

The 50 free was a super close race — Izzy Murzinska was out-touched by only .02 as Murzinska finished in 27.02. Skye Eannotti tied for fourth in the 50 free. The team had first in the 100 free (Murzinska) and 500 free (Lena Savkovic).
