Masuk softball team piles up runs and victories

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s softball team improved to 5-0, following up a 12-7 season-opening win over Norwich Free Academy with eight-run efforts in back to back games, a 16-run barrage and a 24 run outburst. Grace Ely picked up her 100th career hit as the Panther offense continues to shine.

Recent game highlights are as follows:

April 8 at home versus Fairfield Warde: Masuk won 8-3. In the first inning Grace Ely and Josie Lieto were both hit by pitch, Grace Ely stole third, and Lieto stole second to get in scoring position. Ciena Perpetuo put the ball in play to score the first run of the game.

In the second, Ava Parente singled on a bunt, stole second and scored on a single by Peyton Webb to right field. Ely walked and Lieto hit a three-run home run to give Masuk the 5-0 lead heading to the third.

Masuk added to the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with home runs by Peyton Webb and Ely. Mary Saunders pitched 6 innings, earning the win with 7 strikeouts and 7 walks, only allowing 2 hits. Ely closed out the last inning with 2 strikeouts, allowing one hit and one walk.

Saturday at home versus Amity: Masuk won 8-6. In the first inning, Peyton Webb singled on a line drive to right field and stole second. Josie Lieto then singled to center to drive in a run. In the second, Julianna Falcone and Izzy Debernardo walked. Peyton Webb doubled home two runs, giving Masuk a 3-0 lead.

Amity scored twice in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Lieto walked and scored on a single to left field by Mary Saunders. Priscilla Bruno, the courtesy runner, stole second and scored on a single by Julianna Falcone for a 5-2 lead.

Amity battled back to tie the score in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Makayla Gill singled home Debernardo and Ava Parente sacrifice bunted to score Juliana Falcone for a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lieto tripled on a line drive to right center, and Saunders knocked her in with a single.

Saunders pitched for Masuk, allowing 9 hits, striking out 11, and walking only 3.

Monday at New Fairfield: Masuk won 16-4. Peyton Webb doubled on a line drive to right center, and Grace Ely started the scoring with a two-run home run. In the second inning, Ava Parente walked, Izzy Debernardo doubled home a run, Gianna Moretti walked and scored on a Webb triple. Ely homered again, a two-run shot.

In the third inning, Parente singled, Debernardo singled and Gianna Moretti drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Masuk jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the Rebels scored three runs.

In the bottom of the third, Julianna Falcone doubled and scored on a Parente single. Moretti singled home two more runs.

After New Fairfield scored another run in the bottom of the fourth, Ely doubled, Lieto hit an RBI single, Makayla Gill reached on an error that scored a run and Falcone doubled to advance the runners. Ava Guerrera put the ball in play to score another run for Masuk, and the final run was knocked in by Debernardo on a double.

Saunders pitched four innings, striking out 7, walking 6, and allowing 3 hits. Ely came in to relieve in the last inning, allowing no hits and only walking 1.

Wednesday at home against Joel Barlow: Masuk won 26-4. Ely and Lieto doubled and Ely homered en route to picking up her milestone hit. Ely also pitched the first two innings. Violet Schneider closed out by pitching the final three in this mercy-rule, five-inning game.
