Masuk softball squad improves to 5-0

Sofia Lieto swings the bat for the Panthers.

MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s softball team finished off a 5-0 start to the season against non-conference opponents with a pair of hard-fought wins, defeating visiting Southington 2-1 on April 9 and host Cheshire 10-6 on April 13.

In both games, Julia Bacoulis was a strikeout machine fanning 17 Southington batters and 15 Cheshire players.

Against Southington Grace Ely went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the first inning and a solo home run in the sixth inning. Natalie Lieto went 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Madison Aguirre went 1-for-2 with a double. Bacoulis and Sofia Lieto each singled.

In the Cheshire contest Masuk had five hits but used patience at the plate — nine walks — to put traffic on the base paths and used the long ball to cash in.

Ava Moretti went 2-for-2 with a single, double, and two RBI. Bacoulis homered in the third inning to score three runs and Lieto homered in the fourth inning to add two runs. Sofia Lieto went 1-for-3 with a single.

Beginning Monday, April 15, the Panthers are scheduled to face six consecutive South-West Conference opponents as they head to Brookfield at 4:15 p.m. Stratford visits two days later, Wednesday, also at 4:15.
