Masuk hockey team advances to conference finals, players and coach earn recognition

Nate Lisanti earned conference Freshman of the Year honors.

Masuk High’s hockey team punched its ticket to the SCC/SWC Division III Championship game with a 3-1 win over the Shepaug Spartans in the conference tournament semifinals at Danbury Ice Arena on Wednesday night.

The No. 2 Panthers got going with Luke Kondub’s first-period goal before the No. 3 Spartans tied the score. Kondub made it 2-1 in the third. Tommy DaPonte tipped home a shot by Parker Driscoll for some insurance.

Kyle Riccitelli and Graham Cybart recorded assists in the win. Goaltender Maddex LaFountain played great in the net.

With the win, the Panthers will take on the top seed Brookfield-Bethel,-Danbury-Immaculate (BBDI) co-op back in Danbury Friday at 4 p.m. Masuk will look to avenge a 4-1 regular-season loss to BBDI.

Then it is on to the state playoffs, which begin Monday.

Panthers Head Coach Terry Stroz was named Conference Coach of the Year and the following players have been honored:

  • Freshman of the Year: Nathan Lisanti
  • Defenseman of the Year: Noah Comacho
  • Goalie of the Year: Maddex LaFountain
  • Skater of the Year: Luke Kondub

Masuk has a representative in each category — quite an accomplishment. More players from the conference will be named and each honoree will get to participate in a postseason all star game.
