Masuk girls topple Pomperaug for 9th win

MONROE, CT — Sparked by a scoring run late in the second quarter, the Masuk High girls basketball team pulled away and defeated visiting Pomperaug 62-50 in a battle of South-West Conference Panthers on Thursday night.

With the win, Masuk improved to 9-1 overall.

The game was deadlocked at 16 apiece before Masuk went ahead 36-23 heading into halftime.

Bailey Bajda hit a pair of her trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter and scored 12 in the stanza on her way to a 24-point performance. Dani Dube also hit a shot from downtown in that game-changing stanza.

Pomperaug got to within 10 points three times in the second half, but Masuk, which led 47-32 going into the fourth quarter, answered each time to retain its double-digit edge.

Grace Kearney scored two of her 15 points when she drove into the paint and hit a runner for a 51-39 lead with just over five minutes left in regulation.

Dube (13 points) finished a fast break as she took a one touch pass from Kearney and scored to push the lead to 14.

Hannah Fagan scored five and Olivia Garrity added two points in the win.
