MONROE, CT — Tuesday’s Class L State Tournament second-round game was a thriller for Masuk High’s girls soccer team, the No. 2 seed, which prevailed 2-1 in double overtime against No. 15 and upset-hungry Cheshire.
After being held scoreless for 77 plus minutes, the Panthers scored to force overtime, then won in dramatic fashion in the second 10-minute overtime period to advance to the quarterfinals.
With time ticking away and the end of the season seemingly on its way, Claire Fulchino scored to tie things — the equalizer came with just two-and-a-half minutes left in regulation, assisted by Ella McGee.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first overtime.
In the second OT Amelia Stephens scored to send the Panthers into the next round.
Masuk will host familiar South-West Conference foe Brookfield, the No. 7 seed, in the quarters on Saturday at 4 p.m. If recent history is an indicator of what is to come, expect another close, hard-fought battle.
Regulation time was not enough for these teams in two meetings this fall. Masuk and Brookfield tied 1-1 in the regular season and the Panthers edged Brookfield 2-1 in a game decided by penalty kicks in the SWC tourney.
Masuk had a bye in the first round of states. Brookfield beat No. 10 Guilford 1-0.
