Masuk girls nearly pull off another upset

BETHEL, Conn. — Underdogs, the No. 11 Masuk High girls basketball team followed up its upset of No. 6 New Milford in the South-West Conference Tournament’s play-in round with a visit to No. 3 Bethel on Thursday.

The Panthers almost did it again but fell 40-37 to the Wildcats in the quarterfinals. Bethel earned a Saturday semifinal matchup with No. 2 Joel Barlow. No. 1 Notre Dame Prep and No. 5 Kolbe Cathedral meet in the other semi.

Masuk has been competitive all season, nearly coming from be behind in a setback to Barlow and losing to Bethel by just two points in the regular season.

The playoff rematch was close throughout, with Masuk down two at the half. Maddie Farrer led the Panthers with 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Grace Sheppard and Izzy DeBernardo had eight each. Emma Troesser scored four and Sydney Lampley added three.

After a week-plus of practice time the Panthers will get back at it in state playoff action on the road.
