Masuk girls basketball team battles tough Wrecker team as it heads into New Year

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s girls basketball team put forth a valiant effort before falling 69-44 to visiting Staples of Westport on Monday.

The Panthers were within 28-21 at the half and, after falling behind by 15 points cut the deficit to 10 before the Wreckers pulled away behind a turnover-causing defense.

Masuk trailed 47-34 heading to the fourth, but could not claw any closer.

Despite the outcome, Masuk Coach Dan Young was pleased with his team’s effort from start to finish.

“I’m so proud of the way our kids played. We played hard the whole time,” Young said.

The Panthers are a mostly young and inexperienced team and players are getting opportunities, including off the bench.

Against Staples, Emma Troesser scored 13 points and Maddie Farrer and Sydney Lampley both scored nine. Grace Sheppard dropped in five points, Izzy DeBernardo had four and Abby Troesser added two.

Masuk carries a 2-2 record against out-of-conference competition into the New Year. The calendar turn marks the start of South-West Conference play with the Panthers headed to New Milford on Monday, Jan. 5, for a 6 p.m. contest.
