Masuk girls basketball set to tip off season

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk girls basketball will tip off another season with a mix of youth and experience, as the Panthers strive to contend in the South-West Conference.

Masuk has a solid core back in the fold. The team is led by senior captains Maddie Farrer (forward/ center) and Grace Sheppard (guard), along with senior guards Emma and Abby Troesser.

“Excited to bring back four seniors to our team. All four are tremendous workers and have brought enthusiasm to our season. Our goal is to compete for our division and league title,” Coach Dan Young said.

“We will need to continue to develop throughout the season. Outside of our seniors, we are a very young team. Development of sophomores and freshmen will be key to our push to finish the year strong,” Young added.

Masuk’s coach said the Panthers will look to slow down the opposition night in and night out.

“We are still developing our identity, but our success will always begin on the defensive end,” Young said.

The Panthers will test themselves from the get-go with difficult nonconference matchups on the slate.

“We have a very challenging out-of-conference schedule,” Young said. “Opening week, we’re going against Foran (SCC) and Greenwich (FCIAC). Greenwich had a 19-1 season last year and is currently ranked No. 3 in the state. SWC games will also be challenging. Our rival game with Newtown is always circled on the calendar.”

Masuk opens up at Foran of Milford Tuesday at 7 p.m. Greenwich visits Friday, also at 7. The Panthers face Wilton and Staples in two more nonconference games to close out the calendar year. SWC play begins Jan. 5 with a visit to New Milford. Masuk visits Newtown Jan. 15.
