Masuk field hockey team avenges regular-season defeat with state playoff victory

Abby Troesser, left, takes on an opponent this fall. The Panthers won their state playoff opener at New Fairfield on Tuesday and will visit Guilford Thursday.

NEW FAIRFIELD, CT — Masuk’s field hockey team went on the road and pulled off a 3-2 upset win over conference rival New Fairfield in the Class M State Tournament’s opening round on Tuesday.

The Panthers are the No. 14 seed and New Fairfield, which defeated Masuk 6-3 in the regular season, was the No. 3 seed.

In the rematch Masuk came out hard and fast scoring early to set the tone. Abby Troesser assisted Gigi Moretti to open the scoring. Emma Troesser put one in on a stroke penalty in the second quarter, and Abby Troesser recorded the final Panther tally, also in the second quarter.

“The girls worked well together passing the ball and using the entire field,” Masuk Coach Laura Lageman said. “Our defense was especially strong, allowing only three shots on goal. I could not be more proud of the hard work these girls put in. We lost to them in the regular season, but they did not let that get to them. We went into the game with a new attitude and played as if it was a regular game. These girls have drive and last night that showed.”

The Panthers visit No. 6 Guilford in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4 p.m.
