Masuk cheer squad overcomes adversity to perform at SWC competition

The Masuk Panther cheerleaders performed at the SWC Championships in Newtown on Friday.

NEWTOWN, CT — Masuk High’s cheerleading squad overcame a series of 11th hour issues to put their best feet forward in Friday’s South-West Conference Cheerleading Championships.

The roster was reduced to just seven competitors due to a death in one of the families, injury and illness. Losing just one team member from the mat will throw off an entire routine.

With six girls sidelined the Panthers improvised basically on the fly and made the most of their opportunity with an impressive display of scaled back stunts and athleticism.

Those who took the mat were Rosamaria Rodrigues, Brianna Kelly, Hayley Reis, Chloe DuBois (captain), Paige Benway, Sophia Fabrizio and Zuma Soriano.

Several other girls practiced hard throughout the offseason. Catherine McCaffrey and Olivia Maniscalco were missing from the competition. Those sidelined due to injury were Kaylee Edgar (senior captain), Jolie Dunbar, Gabriella Assignon, Lindsey DuBois and Melissa DaSilva.
