Masuk boys volleyball team wins SWC quarterfinal match

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s boys volleyball team, the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 6 and visiting New Milford 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-18) in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals on May 21. The Masuk Panthers visit Pomperaug Tuesday, May 26, at 5 p.m. for a semifinal match.

In the quarterfinals, stat leaders included: Sanju Selvaraju: 1 ace and 16 digs; Caleb Purdy: 13 kills, 2 total blocks, and 12 digs; Jaylen Africot: 7 kills and 4 total blocks; and Trey Sbrega: 18 assists, 1 ace, 5 kills, and 5 digs.

The Panthers went into the postseason on a winning note. They defeated SMSA 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-23) on May 16. Stat leaders: Caleb Purdy: 12 kills, 1 ace, 1 assist, and 8 digs; Trey Sbrega: 13 assists, 4 kills, 1 ace, and 8 digs; and Carter Given: 6 kills and 8 digs.

Masuk won over Newtown 3-1 (25-12, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21) on May 19. Stat leaders: Caleb Purdy: 22 kills, 0.5 total blocks, and 10 digs; Aiden Rodas: 21 assists, 1 ace, 2 kills, 2 total blocks, and 10 digs; Jaylen Africot: 5 kills, 5 total blocks, and 2 digs; and Owen Batch: 5 kills, 4 total blocks, 1 assist, and 4 digs.

Panthers received the following All SWC honors: Caleb Purdy: 1st Team All-SWC; Sanju Selvaraju: All-Colonial Team; Jaylen Africot: All-Colonial Team; and Aiden Rodas: Honorable Mention.
