Masuk boys swim team ready to begin slate

Akkie (Akshaj) Yerragudi and the Masuk swimmers begin the season Friday at Weston.

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s boys swim team will start its season with a visit to South-West Conference foe Weston this Friday at 4 p.m. The team has experience in a variety of events and will look to be competitive throughout the winter.

Masuk’s four captains are seniors Aidan Cammarano, Jack McHugh, Carter Adragna and junior Akkie (Akshaj) Yerragudi.

Cammarano’s main event is the 100 breaststroke, McHugh’s main event is the 100 backstroke, Adragna’s main events are the 50 freestyle and the 100 breast, and Yerragudi’s primary swims are the 100 breast and the 500 free.

Head Coach Jenna Manion and Assistant Michael Shortell expect big things from the 200 medley relay team of Will Hardy (junior) doing the backstroke, Adragna swimming the breaststroke, Mason Eannotti (junior) doing the butterfly, and McHugh competing in the freestyle portion of the relay.

“Coach Jenna and I have a positive outlook on this season,”  Shortell said. “We are already seeing a positive team morale among the boys and we are confident that will continue. We know the boys will work together and accomplish a lot this season in their events and at meets in general. We are feeling good about the group dynamic of our team this season.”

Everyone in the SWC chases Pomperaug of Southbury, winners of the last 13 conference titles, but there are plenty more wins to be had and Masuk plans to pick up its share of victories.

“We believe we will be competitive against other teams this year and secure some great wins. We know it will take a lot of hard work to accomplish our goals, but we believe in our boys and have all the confidence that they will be successful,” said Shortell, adding the coaches believe the Panthers might exceed last year’s successful season.

Some notable meets this season include a home clash with Shelton on Jan. 30 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

“Jenna and I will be coaching against two other coaches who we coach with for the local Rapids Shelton/Monroe club team.  Our boys will be competing against their Rapids teammates from Shelton and Trumbull who some of our boys have swam with most of their lives. It will be a fun, competitive, and meaningful meet,” Shortell said.

Other notable meets include the SWC Championships on Feb 26, State Trials on March 7, State Finals on March 10, and State Opens on March 14.
