Masuk basketball players earn recognition

Ben Londono, left, and Tyler Newsom were both leaders on the court for the Masuk Panthers last season.

MONROE, CT — Two of Masuk High’s boys basketball team standouts were recognized following this past season.

Sophomore Tyler Newsom earned an All State selection and senior Ben Londono was the male recipient for Masuk High CIAC Scholar/Athlete Award. He will be attending Northwestern in the fall.

Newsom averaged 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks per game. Both players were captains of the team this year.

“These two are terrific players, leaders and hard workers. They led us this year to a successful season as we dealt with illness and injury. In the SWC Tournament, we earned the 6 seed and lost to eventual state champion by 2 at the buzzer,” said Masuk Coach Pete Szklarz, whose team reached the second round of the state bracket before falling to eventual runner-up Lewis Mills.
