Jockey Hollow Lions on track for a great season

MONROE, Conn. — The Jockey Hollow Middle School track and field team recently began practicing for its upcoming season. The Lions are led by Head Coach Donald Casey Jr. and Assistant Coach Kathleen Foley and the roster consists of 56 students from grades six through eight.

“We are so proud of every student-athlete on our team,” Casey said. “Students are safe, caring, kind, support each other and work hard. Each student is learning new skills and having fun at the same time. We have built a family-type atmosphere on our team. Most important of all, safety is top priority. We have a team goal for each student to ‘Be an amazing person. All day. Everyday.’ “

Track and field events at the middle school level include relays, sprints, middle distance races, hurdles, long jump, high jump, discus and shot put.

A typical track and field practice consists of the following agenda:

  • One lap warm up
  • Dynamic stretching exercises.
  • Core muscle training and plyometrics.
  • Specific event training.
  • Cool down lap.
  • Static stretching exercises.
  • End of practice meeting and team cheer.
