Girls hockey co-op wins title behind Masuk’s standout goaltender

The South West United hockey team celebrates its conference championship on the ice at Bennett Rink in West Haven.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — The South West United girls hockey team, featuring players from area schools, including Masuk High, captured the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship.

Masuk’s Jen Velky, the starting goaltender for the South West United hockey team, is presented the Most Outstanding Player award by West Haven Athletic Director/SCC representative Joe Morrell.

Led by Masuk’s Jen Velky and her standout goaltending, which earned her the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Award, the team defeated Amity-Cheshire-North Haven 2-1 in overtime at West Haven’s Bennett Rink on Saturday night.

Velky made some tremendous saves among 22 in the championship matchup.

Hannah Newman scored with 27 seconds left in regulation to force OT and Peighton Salerno netted the winner.

“The best experience in the world,” South West United Head Coach Carly Bokina said. “My girls deserved the win. They’ve been fighting so hard this season and they just proved it again on Saturday. They didn’t quit. We’ve been through seven overtimes, including Saturday, and they just truly never quit. I am so proud of each of them.”

“I hope we continue the momentum into states and they understand what they are capable of,” said Bokina, who was named the SCC Coach of the Year.

In addition to Velky, Masuk seniors Carly Leventakos and Joy Bray are also on the team.
