MONROE, CT — The Masuk High boys soccer team began its season on a winning note — in dramatic fashion. The Panthers, led by first-year Coach Jarrod Schulz, came from behind to defeat visiting Ansonia 3-2 on Tuesday.
The Panthers took the lead early on from a nice corner delivered by Cash Dewey and finished by Nick Rodrigues.
The Panthers conceded two goals and had a player sent off. Trailing 2-1 and down to 10 players with 10 minutes remaining Masuk grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat. Dewey scored a direct free kick goal into the bottom right corner of the net and Sam Giampe finished off a beautiful move on an assist from Matteo Iacono.
The Panthers went on to fall 4-1 at Bethel on Thursday and 1-0 at home to Abbott Tech on Friday. Injuries have plagued the team in the early going, so its depth will be put to the test.
Masuk tries to get back into the win column Tuesday at Newtown starting at 7 p.m.
