WEST HAVEN, CT — Masuk High’s softball team used a dramatic comeback to get back to the state championship game. The top-seeded Panthers defeated No. 5 St. Joseph of Trumbull 2-1 behind Grace Ely’s sixth inning two-run home run in Thursday’s Class L State Tournament semifinal at neutral site West Haven High.
The Panthers will face No. 2 Waterford in Saturday’s title game at the University of Connecticut. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
Pitcher and No. 2 hitter Julia Bacoulis walked and scored when Ely followed with a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the sixth, turning a 1-0 deficit into a one-run Masuk edge.
Bacoulis allowed just one run on one hit, walking five and striking out nine.
The Panthers have won six straight state championships.
