MONROE, CT — The Bruce Lazar Memorial Scholarship supports the next generation of educators, who embody the late Stepney Elementary School principal’s values of compassion, dedication and excellence in education. Since 2021, a graduating senior from Monroe Public Schools, who plans to major in education, receives the scholarship during Masuk Senior Awards Night in May.
Those interested in applying for the scholarship are encouraged to contact Carmen Mancuso, [email protected], or stop by the Masuk High School Counseling Department.
This scholarship was established in 2021 to honor the memory of Bruce Lazar, a beloved educator in the Monroe community. Lazar, who passed away that year, was not only a dedicated husband and father, but also a highly respected teacher and school administrator who positively impacted many lives through his commitment to Monroe’s public schools and the Monroe Community.
Lazar’s education career in Monroe began at Fawn Hollow Elementary School before he became principal of Chalk Hill Middle School. He also provided leadership at Jockey Hollow Middle School and Sandy Hook Elementary, offering stability and guidance during challenging times.
His passion for education and children was evident during his time as principal of Stepney Elementary School, where his hands-on approach was well-known and appreciated by all, leaving a lasting impact on the school community.
In addition to his contributions to education, Lazar was a dedicated coach, instilling values of fair play and teamwork through sports to his children and many others in Monroe.
The scholarship established in his honor aims to support aspiring educators who share his passion for teaching and making a positive impact on students’ lives.
Replenishing the fund
This year, Monroe’s public schools will come together to honor Lazar, a baseball fan and supporter of the New York Yankees. On March 27, staff and students will proudly wear their favorite jerseys for Opening Day of the baseball season to remember him.
As part of Jersey Day, the MPS community will donate $1 (or any other amount they wish to). The money will go directly toward the Bruce Lazar Memorial Scholarship.
“Last year, we raised over $3,500 to support and grow the Bruce Lazar Memorial Scholarship,” Stepney Principal Ashley Furnari said. “This community effort exemplifies what makes Monroe a special place to live, learn and grow.”
