CSCU reserve fund could help close gap on education spending for Connecticut municipalities

Dear Editor,

Peggy Villiani has always said, “Monroe First.” The Connecticut State Colleges and University system has a bi-annual budget of $498 million, or $249 million per year. CSCU is currently holding a Reserve Fund Balance of approximately $611 million, or 59 percent above their annual budget of $249 million. In comparison, the Connecticut General Fund is only allowed to hold 18 percent in reserves.

If the CSCU reserve fund gave back only $169 million of their $611 million Reserve Fund (one million for every town/city in Connecticut), their Reserve fund would still be 43 percent above their annual budget of $249 million.

One million dollars for every Town and City, this would certainly help close the gap on education spending.

This is “one” example of many areas, if the “will” existed in Hartford, that could help bring much needed relief.

Solutions …
