Dear Members of the Monroe Board of Finance,
I am writing to you today as a concerned registered Republican resident of Monroe and a strong advocate for our children’s education. I am deeply troubled by the proposed $1.6 million cut to the Board of Education (BOE) budget and I urge you to reconsider this decision and reinstate the full funding. The schools is quite literally one of the main reasons I moved my family to Monroe. Diminishing this affects everyone inclusive of bringing down home values.
The proposed cuts will have a devastating and lasting impact on the quality of education in our town. The elimination of 8-11 certified and 5-7 non-certified staff positions will inevitably lead to larger class sizes across all grade levels, from Pre-K to 12th grade. This will reduce the individual attention each student receives and negatively affect their learning experience.
Furthermore, the need to rebalance our middle and high schools, with Masuk High School becoming grades 8-12 and Jockey Hollow Middle School becoming grades 6-7, is a disruptive change that will affect the social and academic development of our students.
I am also deeply concerned about the elimination of valuable programs such as the STEM Academy and freshman sports. These programs provide students with critical skills, opportunities for growth, and a well-rounded education. Cutting them will not only limit our children’s potential but also make Monroe a less attractive community for families.
I understand the need for fiscal responsibility, but I also know that the BOE’s proposed budget was already lean and primarily reflected rising contractual costs, not an expansion of programs. The fact that Monroe schools have fewer administrative positions than peer districts further highlight their commitment to efficiency.
The proposed tax increase for the current budget is a small price to pay for the quality of our schools. Restoring the BOE funding would only increase this by a marginal amount, a worthy investment in our children’s future and the long-term prosperity of our community.
Strong schools are the bedrock of a thriving community, protecting our home values and quality of life. The future of Monroe depends on the quality of its schools. I implore you to restore the full BOE budget and ensure that our students continue to receive the high-quality education they deserve.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this critical matter.
Sincerely,
Martin Heibeck
