American Legion hopes annual children’s fishing derby catches on

Victoria Grychak, 11, unhooks a fish from her line during the 3rd District of the American Legion's first annual Children’s Fishing Derby at Great Hollow Lake Saturday morning.

MONROE, CT — Victoria Grychak, 11, stood by Great Hollow Lake, while holding her fishing rod Saturday morning, when she felt a wiggle on the other end of her line and slowly reeled in her catch, before holding up the small fish to cheers from her father and, members of other fishing families, moments later.

Grychak was among the more than 40 participants in the 3rd District of the American Legion’s first annual Children’s Fishing Derby, in which children won prizes for catching the biggest fish in different age groups.

Local veterans, including members of Sippin-Winspur Post 176 in Monroe, registered participants under a tent and gave out awards at the lake pavilion.
