MONROE, CT — Victoria Grychak, 11, stood by Great Hollow Lake, while holding her fishing rod Saturday morning, when she felt a wiggle on the other end of her line and slowly reeled in her catch, before holding up the small fish to cheers from her father and, members of other fishing families, moments later.
Grychak was among the more than 40 participants in the 3rd District of the American Legion’s first annual Children’s Fishing Derby, in which children won prizes for catching the biggest fish in different age groups.
Local veterans, including members of Sippin-Winspur Post 176 in Monroe, registered participants under a tent and gave out awards at the lake pavilion.
Among the sponsors were the Newtown Country Club, which donated 40 sets of fishing tackle for kids arriving for the derby without fishing gear.
Other sponsors included Norwalk Post 12, Shelton Post 16, Shelton Unit 16, Stratford Post 42, Ridgefield Post 78, Wilton Post 86, Trumbull Post 141, Monroe Post 176, Bridgeport Post 177 and Newtown Post 202.
