A longtime public servant, Donald Smith enjoyed time with family, friends

Donald Edwin Smith III, a longtime resident of Shelton, passed away on July 4, 2023, at home with his family by his side.

Don was born on December 23, 1962, in Norwalk and was the son of Donald Smith Jr. and Mary Robinson Smith (Schemear). Don graduated from the University of New Haven with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and then later pursued a Masters in Criminal Justice Management at Sacred Heart University. Don is also a graduate of the 253rd session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Don worked at the Fairfield Police Department for 31 years rising to the rank of Deputy Chief of Police before retiring in 2021. Don was also a member of Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Services and served as their chief for the past 12 years.

When he was not at work, Don enjoyed spending time outdoors, woodworking, playing various games, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Amy Bertasso Smith, daughter Samantha Smith Stickney, two sons Michael and Shawn, his father Donald E. Smith Jr., sisters Debbie Smith Dionne, Kelly Smith Cameron, and Amanda Smith, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Don is predeceased by his mother Mary Anne Robinson Schemear and stepfather John Schemear.

Friend are invited to visitation Monday, July 10, 2023 from 3 – 7 p.m. at Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe. Funeral service will be celebrated Tuesday, July 11, 2023, 10 a.m. at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield.
