Underdog Panthers shock Bobcats in girls’ soccer playoff opener

MONROE, CT — The No. 26 seed among 27 to qualify for the Class L State Tournament, Masuk High’s girls soccer team showed why you the games have to be played.

The Panthers went on the road and upset No. 7 Brookfield, a familiar South-West Conference foe, 1-0 on Monday.

Hannah Dorney scored the decisive goal and goalkeeper Elissa Campos made big saves to earn the shutout against the SWC champions.

Masuk avenged its 4-3 loss to Brookfield during the regular season. Brookfield was the No. 5 seed in the conference playoffs before going on a run to the championship.

Up next for the Panthers will be a visit to No. 10 Simsbury in the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. Simsbury defeated No. 23 Joel Barlow, of the SWC, 4-1 in the first round.
