MONROE, CT — A local man allegedly left the scene after accidentally hitting a bicycle on Meadow Brook Drive, knocking its rider, a seven-year-old girl, to the ground Saturday afternoon. The girl was not injured, according to police.
Police said the driver, Joseph Regan, 67, of Meadow Brook Drive, went home instead of waiting for officers to arrive. He was issued a misdemeanor summons for evading responsibility and failure to maintain the proper lane. He has a court date of May 3.
The girl’s father called police around 2:10 p.m. and told officers his daughter was riding her bicycle on the right shoulder of Meadow Brook Drive when he saw a blue Mazda heading north on Twin Brook Terrace at a high rate of speed, according to the report.
Police said the father told them he saw the Mazda turn west onto Meadow Brook Drive, cutting the corner then continuing west. The driver saw the girl on her bike and slammed on his brakes, but the front left side of his vehicle struck the bicycle’s back tire, knocking the girl to the ground, police said.
Vehicle hits patio furniture
An 81-year-old Bridgeport woman struck patio furniture outside the Monroe Professional Building, 450 Monroe Turnpike, with her Hyundai Sonata Monday morning, knocking it into the building. But no one was hurt and there was no damage to the building, according to police.
Police said she had pulled into a parking space around 11:30 a.m., but failed to stop. The woman was given a verbal warning for unsafe movement from a stopped position.
Monroe firefighters and the town building inspector also responded to the call.
