Monroe to have more testing options as COVID cases drop

A homemade sign on Monroe Turnpike, close to the town center early on during the pandemic, encourages unity amid the coronavirus pandemic.

MONROE, CT — A drive-through coronavirus testing site will operate at Masuk High School on Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and a new urgent care center plans to open soon.

In his COVID-19 pandemic update Friday, First Selectman Ken Kellogg announced that DOCS Urgent Care will open at 427 Main St. and offer COVID testing five days a week.

This news came on the heels of Connecticut Department of Public Health data showing a continued drop in Monroe’s case rate, which is now averaging just over five new cases per day.

“This week, Monroe reached over 1,000 cases, or around 5 percent of our population, since the start of the pandemic,” Kellogg said. “Our two-week case rate is now 26.8 cases per 100,000 population.”

Those age 65 and older may now register for vaccinations.

“Please understand that vaccine supply remains limited and that, statewide, it is expected to take at least a month for those over 65 to schedule their first dose,” Kellogg said.

“We continue to run vaccine clinics in Monroe for all eligible individuals,” he added. “Because the amount of vaccine we receive is limited, residents may find earlier appointments from a variety of other providers.”

The town appointments are scheduled as officials receive confirmation of vaccine shipments. As eligibility significantly grows, Monroe’s vaccination clinics are being scheduled through the VAMS online system.

“We encourage eligible residents who have registered in VAMS to check for new appointments that are now available for next week, which we expect will fill quickly,” Kellogg said.

Those who need assistance should consider asking a tech savvy relative or friend for help, or take advantage of other available options, according to Kellogg.

The state’s Vaccine Appointment Assist Line can help people find appointments in the region without the need for email or internet access. The number is 1-877-918-2224.

“Eligible residents who still need assistance may call the Monroe COVID Vaccine Info Line at 203-452-2862,” Kellogg said. “Leave a message if necessary and someone will return your call during normal business hours. Please remember that statewide, all vaccinations are by appointment only.”
