MONROE, CT — Police officers responding to a report of thieves entering vehicles on Fairlea Drive secured the getaway car, before arresting a suspect as he tried to escape in an Uber early Saturday morning.
The male juvenile from Bridgeport was charged with two counts of criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny, second-degree larceny, third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny. He was released to his parent and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Juvenile Court on June 3.
On Saturday, police responded to the complaint of thieves attempting to enter vehicles in a residential driveway on Fairlea Drive at 3:43 a.m.
Though officers did not find the suspects, they found a white Audi A4, which had been reported stolen out of Greenwich.
Police continued to search the area for suspects and, in the course of the neighborhood canvas, found several vehicles that had been left unlocked and were ransacked.
A police sergeant spotted one of the suspects behind a home on Nickel Place at 5:42 a.m. and officers secured the area. A K-9 from the Westport Police Department was called to assist with the search.
While awaiting the arrival of the K-9, officers saw an Uber driver pull up on an adjacent street and an unknown male walking toward the vehicle. He was identified as a juvenile from Bridgeport.
Police said the juvenile told officers he was in the area to meet a friend who lives there. But a check with area homeowners proved this to be false, since none claimed to know him, according to the report.
Items stolen from vehicles in the Barn Hill Road area were found and area surveillance footage recovered from neighborhood residents confirmed the juvenile was one of two involved in these incidents, police said, adding officers were unable to locate the second suspect.
