MONROE, Conn. — A Newtown man was charged with DUI after allegedly driving on the left, front rim of his vehicle, while heading north on Main Street, after his tire blew out Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the vehicle was smoking from being driven on the rim for about a mile on Route 25. Other vehicles were passing it and one witness told police the driver was nodding off, according to the report.
The driver, William Sherman, 69, of 43 Orchard Road in Newtown, was charged with operating under the influence and released on $500 bond for a Feb. 25 court date.
Officers responding to the call pulled the vehicle over, directing Sherman to drive into the parking lot of a nearby business, and police said an officer detected a burning smell as he approached the vehicle.
Sherman had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and a bottle of vodka was visible on the front passenger seat, police said, adding Sherman had a difficult time exiting the vehicle, did not perform field sobriety tests to standard, and breath tests taken at headquarters showed his blood alcohol levels were over the legal limit.
An alleged assault
A Diane Drive man allegedly assaulted his mother during an argument at their home Thursday morning.
Nicholas Farrell, 25, was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct and released on $2,500 bond. He was scheduled to be in court Friday.
Police said officers performed a welfare check at the home after receiving a call from a third party who requested it after getting a text from a friend.
Farrell was arguing with his mother when he allegedly spit in her water, then rolled up a magazine and struck her on the head several times and grabbed her across the mouth, causing injuries to her inner lip.
Police said Farrell pinned his mother down in her chair during the assault.
Based on the officer’s observations, Farrell was taken into custody.
