Jockey Hollow Unified Sports hosts a spring celebration

MONROE, Conn. — National Banner Unified Champion Jockey Hollow Middle School’s Unified Sports team concluded a successful spring season with a celebration on May 28. Students feasted on pizza, ice pops, and played games including Unified Eagle’s Nest and Newcomb.

Throughout the spring session, Special Olympic athletes and student partners learned skills in Unified Wiffleball, cornhole, track and field, kickball and volleyball. Head Coach Donald Casey Jr. said he was proud of all the teamwork and students supporting each other.

“We have created a family type atmosphere during Unified Sports at Jockey Hollow,” he said. “Students, both Special Olympic athletes and student partners, are superb ambassadors for the town of Monroe. They are making a positive impact in the classroom, community and support each other during Unified Sports. Students have learned many new skills and friendships have been established that extend beyond Unified Sports sessions. We are so proud of all 45 students who participated in Unified Sports this year. Each Special Olympic athlete and student partner is a valued, important, and fun member of our team. Go Lions!”

The celebration, which included students from all three Unified Sports sessions this year, concluded with Unified Sports Coordinator Jennifer Fisher and Casey presenting each student with a certificate and gold medal.
